As part of our mindwarehouse initiatives, we have an opportunity to utilize our space and resources to assist social entrepreneurs with physical goods to expand their market reach. Our location offers a great opportunity for pop up shops for temporary retail sales and wholesale distribution showrooms.
We currently have a shop hosted by the “The Jewelry Woman” - Metris Batts Coley. Her shop features African jewellery and textile goods such as clothing and bedding. Metris met Caroline Tanui and her group of fellow entrepreneurs through mutual friends. The group had traveled from Kenya following training via the African Women’s Entrepreneurship Program (AWEP). Their goal was to explore US market opportunities for the export of their handmade goods ranging from hand carved wood products such as bowls and African animals, woven baskets, and beaded jewelry such as necklaces, earrings, and bracelets.
AWEP “is an outreach, education, and engagement initiative that targets African women entrepreneurs to promote business growth, increase trade both regionally and to U.S. markets through the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), create better business environments, and empower African women entrepreneurs to become voices of change in their communities.” The goal of Caroline’s AWEP- Kenya Chapter aims to become a valuable resource for women entrepreneurs who have a viable business concept but need to the gain skills, knowledge, and contacts to be successful. Many of the women in the group produce these handcrafts while they are also tending to their agricultural crops. Purchases help these talented artisans support their families and their community. We are happy to be involved in their efforts to open markets for their goods in the United States.
Metris has been representing their products in Miami focusing on jewelry sales during community events such as a successful trunk show at the Graupel Showroom in Wynwood last month. Items can also been seen and purchased at the onsite shop during Metris’ special events and by appointment. For more information, check out @thejewelrywoman on Instagram or Facebook.
